How we can help
Communication and conflict resolution
STRUGGLING TO TALK WITHOUT IT TURNING INTO AN ARGUMENT?
Do you find yourselves having the same arguments over and over? Does one of you get frustrated while the other shuts down? Or have you reached the point where it's easier not to say anything at all?
Communication problems are one of the most common reasons couples seek help. Sometimes the arguments are about everyday things, but underneath them are bigger frustrations, hurt feelings or things that have never really been resolved.
You might both want things to improve, but have no idea how to stop falling into the same patterns.
At Medi8 Therapy, Stu helps couples understand why their conversations keep going wrong and find practical ways to communicate, deal with disagreements and feel heard by each other.
WHY DO WE KEEP HAVING THE SAME ARGUMENTS?
It's frustrating when a conversation that starts with a simple question or disagreement ends in a row. You might find yourselves bringing up things that happened months ago, getting defensive or walking away without having resolved anything.
Sometimes, it's not even clear how the argument started. You just know you've ended up in the same place again.
You might recognise some of these situations:
One of you feels that the other never listens or takes your concerns seriously.
Small disagreements quickly turn into much bigger arguments.
You struggle to explain how you feel without upsetting each other.
One of you wants to talk things through while the other would rather walk away.
You avoid certain subjects because you know they'll lead to an argument.
You feel more like housemates than partners and don't know how to get back on track.
Over time, these patterns can affect how close you feel, how much you enjoy being together and whether you feel comfortable talking openly.
The good news is that you don't have to keep having the same arguments. Understanding what's happening and learning to handle conversations differently can make a real difference.
HOW CAN MEDI8 THERAPY HELP?
You don't need to agree on everything to have a good relationship. What matters is being able to talk about the things you disagree on without every conversation becoming a battle.
In sessions with Stu, you can explore what's happening between you, understand each other's feelings and build a toolbox of practical ideas to help you communicate better and deal with conflict.
That might include:
Creating space for good communication. Finding the right time and way to talk about difficult subjects, so you both have a chance to speak without the conversation immediately turning into an argument.
Learning to listen to each other. Using active listening to understand what your partner is actually saying, rather than focusing on what you're going to say next.
Setting healthy boundaries. Being clear about what you need from each other and what is and isn't acceptable during difficult conversations.
Agreeing on fair fighting rules. Finding ways to disagree without insults, blame or dragging up every past mistake. It's about keeping arguments respectful and focused on the issue you're trying to resolve.
Understanding your arguments. Looking at what tends to trigger disagreements and why they keep following the same pattern.
Recovering from conflict. Learning how to reconnect after an argument, acknowledge hurt feelings, take responsibility where needed and work through what happened rather than letting resentment build.
Making changes that last. Finding practical ways to approach disagreements differently, so you can start to see a change in your day-to-day relationship.
You won't always see things the same way, but you can learn to listen to each other, talk things through and handle disagreements without things getting out of hand.
WHY RECOVERING FROM CONFLICT MATTERS
Even couples who communicate well will disagree from time to time. What matters is what happens afterwards.
Perhaps one of you is ready to move on while the other is still hurt. Maybe an argument ends with one person walking away, leaving things unresolved, or you both carry on as though nothing happened without actually dealing with the issue.
When this happens repeatedly, frustration and resentment can build up.
Learning how to recover from conflict gives you ways to deal with those moments. That might mean recognising when you need a break before continuing a conversation, acknowledging how your words have affected each other, apologising or finding a way to put things right.
You don't have to resolve every disagreement immediately, but you do need ways to come back to it and work through it together.
Having a toolbox of ideas to draw on can help you handle difficult moments, repair hurt feelings and get back to feeling like you're on the same team.
WHAT IF WE'VE TRIED TALKING AND NOTHING CHANGES?
You may have had countless conversations about the same problems. Perhaps you've promised each other things will be different, only to find yourselves arguing about the same things a few days later.
It can be difficult to see what's going wrong when you're caught up in the middle of it. You might both feel that you're trying to explain yourselves, but neither of you feels understood.
Having someone impartial help you work through those conversations can give you a different perspective. It allows you to look at what's happening between you, recognise the patterns you're falling into and consider what each of you could do differently.
You don't have to wait until you're talking about separating before asking for help. If communication has become a problem, it's worth addressing it before the frustration and resentment build further.
THINGS YOU MAY BE THINKING
Can you help us if we argue all the time?
Yes. If you're constantly arguing or finding that small disagreements turn into big rows, sessions can help you understand why this keeps happening and find more constructive ways to deal with conflict.
What if one of us struggles to talk about our feelings?
People communicate differently. One person might want to talk about everything straight away, while the other finds difficult conversations uncomfortable or needs time to think. Understanding these differences can help you find a way of talking that works better for both of you.
Can you help us if we're no longer communicating at all?
If you've stopped talking about the things that matter, or find yourselves only discussing practical day-to-day matters, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Stu can help you explore what's led to this and whether there are ways to start communicating more openly again.
Can we learn to argue without damaging our relationship?
Disagreements are a normal part of being together. You can learn practical ways to keep arguments fair, respect each other's boundaries and work through the issue without resorting to hurtful comments or leaving things unresolved. Learning how to reconnect after conflict is just as important as learning how to handle the disagreement itself.
What should I do next?
You might know exactly what's causing problems in your relationship, or you might simply feel that something isn't right any more. IN THEIR OWN WORDS...
"I booked with Medi8 for couples support, my husband came along like he was being dragged to the dentist. But somehow, it wasn’t awkward.Stu made it real, easy, and even had us laughing (yes, laughing in therapy!). We left understanding each other better than we had in years. Not a magic fix, but a real one, and that’s even better.
If one of you is unsure, trust me: give Medi8 a try. You might just walk out smiling."
